1. Verify the breeder before anything else
Legitimate breeders welcome video calls, photos of the parents, and questions about health testing. If a seller pressures you to send a deposit before you see the puppy live on video, walk away.
2. Expected US price ranges
- Standard Chihuahua from a reputable breeder: $2,500–$4,500
- Teacup or tiny Chihuahua: $4,000–$7,500
- Long hair from imported European lines: $4,500–$7,500+
Ranges vary with region, coat, and current availability. Anyone quoting a firm number sight-unseen may not be reputable.
3. Health records you should receive
Vet-signed vaccination and deworming records, health guarantee in writing, parent health testing where applicable, and microchip information. See our health guarantee.
4. Safe transport options
Two acceptable options: personal ground delivery, or a licensed in-cabin flight nanny where the puppy travels in the cabin. Cargo shipping is never safe for a tiny puppy.
5. Regional notes
Cold-weather states (NY, IL, WA, DC) — plan for indoor potty pads and a puppy sweater. Warm states (FL, TX, CA, AZ) — prioritize A/C in peak afternoons. Whichever region you live in, insist on the same standards of paperwork and safe transport.
