Teacup Chihuahua Puppies: What Buyers Should Know

What a teacup Chihuahua actually is

"Teacup" is not an official AKC size class — it is a market term for the smallest Chihuahuas, usually adults under 4 lb. They are the same breed as standard Chihuahuas, just at the low end of the weight range.

Realistic adult size

Predicting a puppy's adult weight is more art than science, but a reputable breeder can give you a realistic range based on both parents, the litter size, and the puppy's growth curve at 8–12 weeks.

Health basics

Because they are so small, teacups need extra care in three areas:

  • Blood sugar — small, frequent meals to prevent hypoglycemia.
  • Dental — tiny mouths often crowd teeth; expect brushing and dental care.
  • Impact injury — never jump from furniture, always supervised on stairs.

Home setup before pickup

  • Soft playpen with a heated pad option
  • Small kibble sized for tiny mouths
  • No-slip food and water bowls
  • Puppy-safe teething chews
  • A vet appointment scheduled within the first week

Buying safely

Only buy from a breeder who will meet you live on video, provide vet records, and give a written health guarantee. Cargo shipping is unsafe for teacups — insist on in-cabin nanny or ground delivery.
