Long hair vs smooth coat — the honest differences
Both varieties are the same breed with the same standard. The only formal difference is coat length.
Grooming
- Long hair — brush 2–3 times a week to prevent tangles behind the ears and on the tail feathering.
- Smooth coat — a weekly wipe-down and occasional bath is enough.
Shedding
Contrary to myth, long hair Chihuahuas often shed less visibly because their hair sheds in strands rather than short prickly hairs. Neither variety is hypoallergenic.
Climate fit
- Warm climates (SoCal, Miami, Houston, Phoenix) — smooth coat is easier.
- Cool climates (SF fog, Seattle, Chicago, NYC) — long hair offers more natural insulation, but both do well with a puppy sweater.
Temperament
No proven personality difference between the two coats. Individual variation matters far more than coat type.
Price
Long hair puppies from imported bloodlines usually price a little higher due to demand.
Which should you choose?
Choose smooth coat if you want lowest-maintenance grooming. Choose long hair if you love the classic silky look and can commit to twice-weekly brushing.
