How to Find a Reputable Chihuahua Breeder in California
By Yulia Sky · July 6, 2026

What "reputable" actually looks like
California has world-class Chihuahua breeders — and it has puppy mills and scammers hiding behind pretty websites. Here is how to tell them apart.
Green flags
- Live video meet with the puppy before any deposit.
- Vet-signed vaccination and deworming records shared before pickup.
- Written health guarantee covering genetic conditions.
- In-home raised with photos or video of the actual environment.
- Small litters and waitlists — not "always available."
- Both parents on-site or well-documented pedigree if imported.
- Age at pickup — never before 8 weeks (10–14 for teacups).
- Personal delivery or in-cabin nanny — never cargo shipping.
- Reference from past buyers on request.
- Willing to say no to unqualified homes.
Red flags
- Pressure to send a deposit before you have talked to a human.
- Prices that are dramatically below market.
- Refusal to do a video call.
- "AKC certified" claims with no paperwork to back them up.
- Requests for wire transfers or gift cards.
Where to start looking
- AKC Marketplace and regional Chihuahua clubs.
- Word-of-mouth from your vet.
- Small in-home California breeders with a public brand and Google reviews.
