First-week Chihuahua puppy supply checklist
Sleeping and safety
- Soft-side playpen (24"–36") — the puppy's safe base for the first weeks.
- Small crate with a soft washable pad — for sleep and travel.
- Puppy heating pad with an auto-off timer.
Feeding
- Small-breed puppy kibble — whichever brand the breeder is currently using; transition slowly if you switch.
- No-slip stainless bowls.
- Nutri-Cal or equivalent — a dab on the gums if blood sugar dips.
Potty training
- Real-grass or washable pee pads.
- Enzyme cleaner for accidents.
Walking and travel
- Soft harness sized XS/toy — never a neck collar for a young Chihuahua.
- Retractable or short 4-ft leash.
- Airline-safe in-cabin carrier for vet visits and travel.
Grooming
- Small pin brush (long hair) or rubber grooming mitt (smooth coat).
- Puppy shampoo, tearless.
- Nail grinder — safer than clippers for tiny nails.
Health
- First-week vet appointment on the calendar.
- Toy-breed dental chews.
What to skip
- Retractable leashes for very young puppies.
- Bulky metal crates.
- Grain-free diets unless your vet specifically recommends one.
- Rawhide.
