Apple Head Chihuahua Breeders in Los Angeles: How to Vet One
By Yulia Sky · August 16, 2026
If you are searching for apple head Chihuahua breeders in Los Angeles, the hard part is not finding listings — it is telling which ones come from an actual breeder. LA is the biggest Chihuahua market in the country, which means it also attracts the most brokers, resellers, and outright scams. Here is how to sort them.
First, what apple head means
Apple head is the Chihuahua breed standard: a domed, rounded skull, a short muzzle set at roughly a 90-degree angle to the face, and large, wide-set eyes. It is what the AKC standard describes and what most people picture when they picture a Chihuahua.
Deer head Chihuahuas have a longer, sloped muzzle and a flatter skull. They are wonderful dogs and often slightly sturdier, but they sit outside the show standard. Neither type is healthier by default — health comes from the breeding program, not the head shape.
Because apple head is the standard rather than a variant, you want a Chihuahua specialist, not a general puppy site that lists twelve breeds.
Nine questions to ask a Los Angeles breeder
- Can I meet the puppy live on video today? Any real breeder can do this within a day or two. Refusal or endless excuses ends the conversation.
- Can I see the mother? Not always possible if she is nursing and stressed, but a breeder should at least show her on video and talk about her temperament.
- Where are the puppies raised? In-home underfoot produces better-socialized dogs than a kennel or garage. Ask to see the space on the call.
- What health testing is behind the pairing? Chihuahuas can carry patellar luxation, heart murmurs, hydrocephalus, and liver shunt risk. A breeder should discuss this comfortably and specifically.
- May I see vet-signed vaccination and deworming records? These should exist before you ask, not be produced after.
- What does your written health guarantee actually cover, and for how long? Read the document. A guarantee that requires you to return the dog to claim it is not much of a guarantee for most families.
- At what age do puppies go home? Ten to twelve weeks minimum. Fourteen for teacup sizes. Anyone offering an eight-week-old teacup is prioritizing the sale over the puppy.
- How is the puppy delivered? In Los Angeles there is no reason for cargo shipping. Hand-delivery or in-person pickup only.
- What support do I get after pickup? Feeding, training questions, vet milestones. A breeder who disappears after payment was never invested in the dog.
Red flags specific to the LA market
- Deposit-only communication. Every message steers back to payment and none of them answer your questions.
- Payment methods with no recourse. Wire transfers, gift cards, or crypto only. Real breeders accept traceable payment.
- Stock photography. Reverse image search the listing photos. Recycled photos across multiple listings are extremely common in LA classifieds.
- A different pickup city than advertised. "Los Angeles" listings that turn out to ship from another state are brokers, not breeders.
- Same-day pressure. "Three other families are interested tonight" is a sales script, not a fact.
- Prices far below market. A few hundred dollars for a teacup apple head in Los Angeles is not a bargain, it is a signal.
Paperwork you should receive
At pickup, you should walk away with vet-signed vaccination and deworming records, the written health guarantee, pedigree or registration paperwork where applicable, microchip details, and a written feeding schedule with the food the puppy is currently eating. If any of these are "coming later," get a date in writing.
