Welcoming Your Chihuahua Puppy — A First-Week Guide
By Yulia Sky · June 21, 2026
Bringing home a teacup Chihuahua puppy is one of the most exciting weeks of your life — and one of the most fragile weeks of your puppy''s. After delivering Chihuahua puppies for sale to families across California, here''s the first-week playbook I give every family.
Before pickup: the essentials list
- Small-breed puppy kibble (the exact brand your breeder uses)
- Premium small-breed canned puppy food to mix on top
- Nutri-Cal high-calorie gel for emergencies
- Two shallow ceramic bowls
- A soft 18–22" crate with a washable bed
- An exercise pen or baby gate
- Indoor potty pads + a real-grass tray
- A 4-foot leash and a soft H-harness (never a collar for a teacup)
- A litter-scented blanket from the breeder
- A car carrier rated for under 10 lb
The first 48 hours: keep it boring
Pick one quiet room. Set up the pen, crate, bowls, and pad in one corner. Let your puppy explore on their own four feet. No visitors. No bath. No long drives. The single biggest mistake new owners make is overwhelming a teacup in the first 72 hours.
Feeding schedule for a teacup Chihuahua
Under 3 lb? Four meals a day. Sample week-one schedule:
- 7:00 am — 1 tbsp kibble + 1 tsp wet food, warm water
- 11:30 am — same
- 4:00 pm — same
- 9:00 pm — small bedtime snack
If your puppy won''t eat, warm the food, hand-feed a few pieces, try again. Never let a tiny Chihuahua skip more than one meal.
Potty training the California way
Most of our California families do a hybrid: real-grass indoor tray plus outdoor walks once vaccines are complete. Take your puppy to the pad every 20–30 minutes during awake time, after meals, naps, and play. Praise lavishly the second they go. Never punish accidents — clean with an enzyme cleaner.
Sleep and the crate
A soft crate next to your bed for the first week reduces crying enormously. Put the breeder''s blanket inside, a soft toy, and a tiny treat. If they cry at 3 am, take them to the pad — no talking, no playing — then back in the crate.
What to skip in week one
- Bath time (wait 7–10 days)
- Long car rides
- Dog parks or unfamiliar dogs
- Yelling or alpha-rolling
- Children carrying the puppy unsupervised
Vet visit timing
Schedule the first vet visit within 72 hours of pickup. Bring all paperwork from your California Chihuahua breeder — vaccination record, deworming log, microchip number, health guarantee.
A note for apartment families
We deliver Chihuahua puppies to a lot of apartment dwellers in DTLA, Marina del Rey, La Jolla, and downtown San Diego. Tiny apartments suit teacup Chihuahuas perfectly. Keys: a real-grass indoor tray, a soft harness for elevator rides, and a consistent quiet corner.
The honest truth about week one
Your new Chihuahua puppy may cry at night. They may pee on your rug. They may turn their nose up at dinner once. None of that means you''ve failed. Stay calm, stay on schedule, and call your breeder when in doubt.
If you''re still researching where to buy a Chihuahua puppy in California, look for a breeder who walks you through this entire setup before pickup — not after.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need before bringing home a teacup Chihuahua?
Small-breed puppy kibble (the brand the breeder used), shallow ceramic bowls, a soft 18–22" crate, an exercise pen, indoor potty pads, a soft H-harness, Nutri-Cal gel, and a litter-scented blanket.
How often should I feed a Chihuahua puppy in the first week?
Four small meals a day for puppies under 3 lb — typically 7 am, 11:30 am, 4 pm, and a small bedtime snack.
When can I bathe my new Chihuahua puppy?
Wait at least 7–10 days. Tiny puppies chill fast and stress hits their blood sugar. A warm wipe-down is plenty for week one.
