Apple Head vs. Deer Head Chihuahua: The Complete Comparison Guide

If you have started researching Chihuahua puppies, you have almost certainly seen the terms Apple Head and Deer Head. They describe two distinct head shapes within the same breed — and the difference matters when you are choosing a puppy, evaluating a breeder, or thinking about the show ring.

At World Class Puppies, every one of our Chihuahuas is an Apple Head — the shape that defines the official AKC breed standard. Here is the honest, side-by-side comparison so you can pick the right puppy with confidence.

Quick answer

  • Apple Head Chihuahua — rounded, apple-shaped skull, short muzzle, prominent forehead, larger eyes. This is the only variation recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
  • Deer Head Chihuahua — longer, sloped skull, longer muzzle, ears set at a wider angle. Beautiful dogs, but not eligible for AKC conformation shows.

Both are 100% Chihuahua. The differences are structural, not a separate breed.

Breed standard — what the AKC recognizes

The AKC Chihuahua breed standard is specific: "A well rounded 'apple dome' skull, with or without molera." That single sentence is why only Apple Heads can compete in AKC conformation shows. Deer Heads can still register with the AKC and compete in agility, obedience, and rally — they simply cannot enter the breed ring.

If you plan to show, or you want a puppy from parents that meet the written standard, an Apple Head from a reputable breeder is the answer.

Temperament — is one friendlier than the other?

Temperament is driven far more by breeding, early socialization, and environment than by head shape. That said, owners report some soft tendencies:

  • Apple Heads are often described as more cuddly and lap-oriented, likely because their smaller size makes them natural companion dogs.
  • Deer Heads tend to be a touch more athletic and independent thanks to their longer legs and larger frame.

Both are loyal, alert, and famously bonded to one person. Both need patient, positive-reinforcement training and early socialization to prevent the small-dog nerviness Chihuahuas can develop when under-socialized.

Health considerations

The Apple Head's shorter muzzle means a slightly higher chance of two well-known Chihuahua traits:

  • Molera — a soft spot on the top of the skull, similar to a human baby's fontanelle. The AKC standard explicitly allows it. Most close naturally; a responsible breeder will show you the puppy's molera and explain what is normal.
  • Dental crowding — a shorter jaw leaves less room for a full set of teeth, so a lifelong dental-care routine (daily brushing, annual cleanings) is important.

Deer Heads, with their longer muzzle, usually have fewer dental issues and slightly easier breathing on hot days. Their larger size also means a bit more resilience with active families.

Regardless of head shape, always ask a breeder for:

  • Written health guarantee (see our Health Guarantee)
  • Vet records for the puppy and both parents
  • Proof of age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming
  • The chance to meet the mother

Which one is right for you?

Choose an Apple Head Chihuahua if you want:

  • A puppy that matches the official AKC breed standard
  • The classic Chihuahua look — round head, big eyes, tiny frame
  • A true lap dog under 6 lbs
  • Show or conformation potential

Choose a Deer Head Chihuahua if you want:

  • A slightly larger, more athletic Chihuahua (8–12 lbs)
  • A more durable companion for older kids or active households
  • The Chihuahua personality without the strictest show standard

Frequently asked questions

Is one type more expensive? Apple Heads from show-quality lines often command higher prices because they meet the AKC standard and are eligible for conformation. Deer Heads from health-tested parents are still excellent pets.

Can two Apple Head parents have a Deer Head puppy? Yes — head shape is polygenic, and litters can include both. Reputable breeders select breeding pairs to consistently produce apple-domed puppies.

Do Deer Heads live longer? There is no meaningful lifespan difference. Both typically live 14–16 years with good care.

Are Apple Heads the "original" Chihuahua? Yes. The apple-domed head is the historic breed type traced to the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, and it is what the AKC recognized when the breed was accepted in 1904.
